Gomshall Craddock Cottages
The proposed development at 1 Craddock Cottage establishes development firmly within the identified settlement area of Gomshall and in so doing acts to reaffirm and intensify this piece of road frontage within the village centre.
Neighboring villages such as Shere provide many clues in their pleasing ‘organic’ evolution and intensity of clustered vernacular forms, from which this project draws reference in volumetric composition, scale and materials.
Whilst the proposal brings to the village two small family houses the overall arrangement of three juxtaposed forms continues the texture of the village across this ‘infill’ site.
The topography, with its level change of two meters from north to south offers opportunities to cut the buildings into the landscape and define amenity space to the dwellings at both upper and lower levels. The staggered plan form brings morning light and entraps private space away from the street whilst allowing these houses to maintain public decorum in the village.
Gomshall won the South East 2009 RIBA award.
